About our college and our library

         JOGANANDA DEVA SATRADHIKAR GOSWAMI COLLEGE

J.D.S.G .College, the premier  institute of higher learning at Bokakhat in the district of Golaghat, was established on 24th July, 1964. This is the western most college under the Jurisdiction of Dibrugarh University.

The Library of the College was established in 1964, the same year the College was founded. It was founded for realizing the institutional mission and vision of contributing to the academic pursuits of the students and of general public of the locality. Started with a humble beginning, the Library has come a long way in terms of quality and quantity of subscription of books, journals, newspapers, periodicals, e-resources, etc. and has catered to the diverse needs of the student and teachers’ community besides the general public. Categorical mention may be made of the fact that in absence of a general public library or a sub-divisional library, the College Library has been serving the purposes of the large locality ever since its inception. Besides a large number of foreign and domestic tourists visit this place every year attracted by the famous Kaziranga National park and other places of historical importance like Numaligarh, Deopahar etc. Obviously these tourists search for knowledge regarding our state and the locality but their thirst for knowledge remains unquenched due to absence of proper library facility. Some of them visit the College library too in search of information.
The existing library building of our College was constructed in the year 1981 to support the limited number of students of that time. But with the increasing enrolment of students and introduction of a variety of courses like Tourism, Human Rights, Gandhian Studies etc., the existing facilities have become insufficient to meet the need of time. Moreover, a study Centre of Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) under Gauhati University, a centre of the K.K Handiqui State Open University and State Open Schooling under AHSEC are also accommodating a large number of learners who were otherwise denied/deprived of higher education due to diverse socio-economic and family barriers. They also need the help of a well equipped library in the College campus. Again, with the introduction of semester system in Degree courses, our problems have begun to multiply. Even amidst these obstacles, we have been rendering our devoted services to the stake-holders including basically the students, teachers and the general public.
The Library is run by a Library Committee with funds received from the Government, UGC, Alumni Association and fees collected from the students. It is being conducted by the Librarian,  Library Assistant, a Bearer and a contractual Library Assistant cum computer operator.
Presently, a number of facilities have been opened up for the students and others in the Library. These include reprographic facility, internet surfing/downloading/printing, access to e-resources like e-journals, etc. The automation of the Library is going on.
Keeping in tune of its mission and vision, the Library has opened a special collection of books, magazines, souvenirs, documentary, etc. pertaining to the locality of Bokakhat. In addition to it, another special collection of books, souvenirs, articles, seminar papers, video CDs, documentary, etc. on the Kaziranga National Park is being mooted and we wish it will materialize soon.
In order to create awareness and give a boost to the general reading habits in the students and others, the Library has been organizing book fairs, quiz competitions, etc. in the College premises in collaboration with Book Publishers like Satirtha . It has also organized recitation, popular lectures, etc. to commemorate the occasions.
It needs to be mentioned that in its onward march towards improvement and updation, the Library has been getting the sincere help and cooperation of the Alumni Association since 2002. It has donated books and equipments to the Library. The present Committee of the Association has already started a year-long programme of collecting/donating books for the needy students. We hope to sustain the same pace of development in the near future.
